The University Council (Consu) of Unicamp unanimously approved, this Tuesday morning (4), in an extraordinary session, the appointment of professor Nancy Lopes Garcia to occupy the position of pro-rector of Postgraduate Studies at the University. The professor replaces professor André Furtado, who left the command of the Dean of Postgraduate Studies (PRPG) to complete an internship in the Netherlands.
According to Dean Marcelo Knobel, when he invited André Furtado to PRPG, the internship had just been approved by the São Paulo State Research Support Foundation (Fapesp). “I asked him to postpone the trip as long as possible and organize the PRPG according to our management proposal, which he did. I would like to thank, on my own behalf and on behalf of the Central Administration of Unicamp, the excellent work carried out by Professor André Furtado”, stated the director. André Furtado did not participate in the session because he traveled to the Netherlands the night before.
Faced with the need to replace the PRPG command, Knobel added, the Central Administration began to think of a name that could occupy the position and continue the activities that were being carried out. “We analyzed some names and arrived at Professor Nancy, to whom I invited her. To our delight, she accepted the challenge. You are very welcome”, wished the rector, who also pointed out that from now on, women will make up the majority in the University's Central Administration, with four positions.

Addressing the counselors, the new dean of Postgraduate Studies declared that she feels honored to be able to contribute to the management of Unicamp. “I hope to face the challenges that lie ahead by mirroring the work carried out by my predecessors. I also hope to live up to everyone’s expectations and count on the support of the Rectory and the internal community.”
Nancy Lopes Garcia graduated in Statistics from Unicamp itself. She obtained a master's degree in Mathematics from the National Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics Association (1988) and a PhD in Statistics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1993). She is currently a member of the teaching staff of the Statistics Department of the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computing (Imecc) at Unicamp.
