Now it's official. Planned since last year, the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the second class of Unicamp students will take place on September 22nd. More than 200 people have already confirmed their presence at the meeting, including students at the time and their companions. Most of the 251, the number that the event's organizing committee works with, were located, with less than 10 remaining. The sad news: 35 have already passed away.

Frederico Atílio, known as Fred, who turns 71 on September 9, a retired computer scientist, is one of nine team members preparing the group's meeting on campus this month. He says that the 3,5 meter white jequitibá, to be planted in the Ciclo Básico square, has already been purchased. The schedule is practically closed. Meeting at 8:30 am at the Convention Center, badge delivery, ecumenical service and formal golden jubilee ceremony are among the initial items.
Dean Marcelo Knobel, with whom Fred and Cristina Aranha, another member of the class of 1968, met last month at the Rectory, is expected to participate in the morning activity. Then the group heads to Básico, where the jequitibá is planted, close to the arena theater. The Visiting Professor's House, CPV, is the place for lunch and happy hour in the early evening. The University provided the Convention Center. Other expenses are borne by the participants.
A meeting of the committee that organizes the reunion of the class of 1968 took place last Friday night, the 31st. Fred explains that not everyone lives in Campinas. People came from São Paulo and cities in the region. Among other topics was the collection of period photos, which should form part of a collection from now on. The group asks participants of the meeting on the 22nd to bring theirs.
In addition to photos, there will be no shortage of stories. Fred recalls that many students lived in republics close to Rua Culto à Ciência, where classes were taught at Colégio Bento Quirino, which would later become the headquarters of the Colégio Técnico de Campinas, Cotuca. “In the late afternoon we would gather at the Maloca do Escudo Negro republic, which was on the corner of Hércules Florence and Falcão Filho streets, to enjoy the departure of the Culto à Ciência students”, he recalls. On average, 15 to 20 gathered there around 17 pm. 14 Unicamp students lived in Maloca. Only in 1969 were the courses transferred to the Barão Geraldo campus, amid the construction of many buildings.
Still on the schedule, a band was confirmed for happy hour. Zaga Ribeiro Piano & Voz is by a former student from the class of 1969. In fact, in addition to the students who entered Unicamp in 1968, there was a lot of integration with other classes. At least 30 of them were invited. Furthermore, the group promoting the activity on the 22nd found 20 names that were not on the list of 251. Fred says that 'some of these fell through' and joined the class of 1969 or entered Unicamp and did not stay. They were also invited.
Among those who stayed and finished their courses are professors from Unicamp. Such as Celso Arruda (Mechanical Engineering), Roberto Pessi (Chemistry), Daniel Camilo (Electrical Engineering), just to name a few. On the 22nd, certainly, much of what happened in 1968 will be remembered. So it's good not to miss it.
