Entrepreneurs linked to Unicamp's daughter companies can register their cases for the Entrepreneur of the Year Award starting next Wednesday, September 5th. The initiative, which is an opportunity to showcase successful entrepreneurship experiences, receives proposal submissions until September 29th, via the website. The pitches of the finalist cases will be presented in the Unicamp Ventures Meeting 2018, carried out during the InovaCampinas, on October 24th.

The Award is divided into categories: Innovation, Social Impact and Greater Growth (Scale-up). All details for each category are available in the initiative's regulations, here. The winners of the three categories will compete for Entrepreneur of the Year, who will be chosen for their leadership role, creativity and problem-solving ability. The cases will be evaluated by the Unicamp Ventures Meeting Organization Committee, which is made up of advisors from Unicamp Ventures and members of the Inova Unicamp Innovation Agency.

This is the second edition of the award. Last year, MoveEdu was chosen in the “Fastest growing company” category and Veduca won the award in the “Social Impact” category. Eduardo Neger, from Neger Telecom, the winning company in the Innovation category, was chosen as Entrepreneur of the Year. Neger presented the case of METROSAT, a system that monitors the entire national territory, emerging as a solution to reverse a problem faced by women farmers: the robbery and theft of agricultural machinery and implements. “This award encourages us to continue undertaking, researching and evolving every day”, stated the entrepreneur.

This vision is shared with professor Newton Frateschi, executive director of Inova Unicamp. “It is a way of fostering the entrepreneurial ecosystem, as the initiative is an incentive for the creation of new technology-based ventures. These new businesses will bring technological and economic benefits to society. In other words, it is the investment in public education returning in the form of new products and services”, he argues.

New balance of Unicamp's daughter companies

A much-awaited moment of the Unicamp Ventures Meeting is the publication of the updated balance sheet of Unicamp's daughter companies. The survey work is carried out by the Inova Unicamp Innovation Agency, which locates new companies and monitors the evolution of these companies' indicators. Unicamp's daughter companies are considered to be those that were created by students, former students, former teachers and researchers, in addition to those created in the Unicamp Technology-Based Business Incubator (Incamp) or that have some Unicamp technology in their activity main.

According to the survey released at the Unicamp 2017 Meeting, Unicamp's daughter companies surpassed the mark of 28 thousand jobs created, a number that represented an increase of 31% compared to the previous year. Furthermore, 584 daughter companies were already registered in the system and 485 were active on the market. Together, they recorded more than R$3 billion in annual revenue. Among Unicamp's daughter companies are big names such as Movile and CI&T. See the full report here.

Sponsoring this edition of Unicamp Ventures are CI&T, Movile, Matera, FM2S, Sabiá, Web Training and Baita Aceleradora. As a reward, the winner in the Entrepreneur of the Year category will receive R$50 in marketing services (Sinapro table value), offered by sponsor Sabiá.
