In computer science, Unicamp shares national leadership with the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). Classified in the 2019 edition of THE Computer Science Subject Ranking Between positions number 251 and 300, the two Brazilian institutions are also the vice-leaders in the area in Latin America, behind only the University of Chile.
In engineering and technology, first place in Brazil is shared with the University of São Paulo (USP). The two states of São Paulo appear in the 2019 THE Engineering and Technology Subject Ranking between positions number 401 and 500, tied with the Federico Santa Maria Technical University, in Chile. The trio is second only, among Latin American universities, to the Instituto Tecnológico e de Estudos Superiores de Monterrey, from Mexico, classified in the group that covers positions number 301 to 400.
This was Unicamp's debut in the ranking of THE for the area of computer science, which is now in its third edition. The 2019 list contains 684 institutions in total, more than double the 301 included in the 2018 edition.
The British publication also increased the number of universities evaluated in the area of engineering and technology, from 500 to 900. Unicamp lost opposition in relation to the 2018 ranking, in which it was classified between 301st and 400th place.
A THE It currently produces 11 rankings for specific areas of knowledge. All of them are based on the same 13 indicators that the publication uses to create its traditional global ranking of universities, whose 2019 edition was released in September. A THE makes only a few adaptations to its methodology so that each list reflects the characteristics of the area in question.
The 2019 rankings for the areas of computer science and engineering and technology were the last to be released by THE. The rest left in the course of October and this month of November.
QS, another important organizer of international university rankings, released its classifications by areas of knowledge earlier, in February.
