Registration is now open for the 11th edition of the National Olympiad in Brazilian History (ONHB), a project developed by the Department of History at Unicamp. The first stage of the registration process (with discount) continues until March 20th. The second phase ends on April 29th – or until the limit of interested parties is reached.

The History Olympiad has a completely original format and is aimed at teachers and students in elementary school (8th and 9th years) and high school in public and private schools. In 2018, when it completed 10 years, ONHB reached a record number of registrants with 14,3 thousand teams, a total of 57,5 thousand participants from all Brazilian states, with particular emphasis on the Northeast region with 67% of finalist teams .[See photos from the latest edition].

How works

The competition has six online phases, in addition to the in-person final held at Unicamp, in Campinas-SP. The tests are carried out during the stages – lasting one week each – by teams made up of a History teacher and three students. The answers (multiple choice questions and tasks) can be prepared by participants based on debate with colleagues, research in books, the internet, teacher guidance, in addition to a range of documents and references offered.

Upon completing the six online phases, the finalist teams participate in the in-person grand final at Unicamp, on August 17th and 18th. In the final, the groups take an essay test on Saturday and, the following day, participate in the awards ceremony with the presentation of medals.

“The History Olympiad’s main objective is to encourage the development of critical analysis and discussions on the most varied subjects. To make this possible, we offer information, texts, images and maps in the tests and tasks to support the preparation of answers”, explains the professor at the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences (IFCH) at Unicamp and coordinator of the ONHB, Cristina Meneguello.

The main difference between ONHB and other competitions is that it does not require students to have prior knowledge of the subject, as the methodology allows the team to discuss, research and analyze issues among themselves, with support from the teacher. Furthermore, through the content and in-depth study of themes in Brazilian History, the Olympiad helps prepare participants for entrance exams, competitions and the ENEM (National High School Examination), among others. “Over the years, we have realized that the methodology contributes quite significantly to the teaching of History in the classroom, encouraging teamwork and the development of critical analysis”, explains the coordinator.

The first phase will begin on May 6th, ending the sixth stage on June 15th. After the six phases, at least 200 teams (800 participants) will be classified and called up for the in-person final. The project has support from CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development) and is developed by the Department of History through the participation of teachers, postgraduate and undergraduate students.
