Unicamp is the 204th best-rated university in the world in five major areas of knowledge: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences and Management. The data is included in a ranking prepared by the British consultancy Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), specialized in analyzing the performance of higher education institutions. Also according to the list, released early this Tuesday evening (26), the most prominent discipline at the University is “Dentistry”, which appears in 34th position among the schools verified.
The 2019 QS Ranking evaluated 1.128 universities from 73 countries. 48 subjects (disciplines or areas) were considered. According to the analysis, Unicamp's strongest area of knowledge is Engineering and Technology, which is in position 130 among the institutions analyzed, followed by Natural Sciences (157), Arts and Humanities (164), Social Sciences and Management ( 188) and Life Sciences and Medicine (222).
When breaking down the areas that make up the ranking, in addition to Dentistry, “Modern Languages” and “Agriculture and Forestry” also appear in the group of the 100 best disciplines. The QS classification is based on six criteria: academic reputation (40%), job market reputation (10%), faculty/student ratio (20%), proportion of international faculty (5%), proportion of international students (5%) and number of citations per professor (20%), which measures the productivity of researchers at an institution and the impact of the work they publish. The parameters receive different weights depending on the area analyzed.
Dean Marcelo Knobel was satisfied with the evaluation received by Unicamp. “Once again we have a good result in an important international ranking, highlighting the fundamental role of public universities in the development of science and technology in Brazil. It is important to highlight the Faculty of Dentistry of Piracicaba, which ranks 34th worldwide in the area of Dentistry, a position that deserves to be celebrated”, declared the director.
