The rector of Unicamp, Marcelo Knobel, and the superintendent of the Unicamp Clinical Hospital, Antonio Gonçalves Filho, inaugurated this Wednesday (17), the hospital's new Pediatric ICU with 20 beds. Work to double the capacity - from 10 to 20 - began last year and cost R$3,4 million with resources from the University's rectory. The State Department of Health guaranteed resources of R$8.952.840,45 per year to cover the cost of 10 new beds (inputs and hiring). This is the largest pediatric ICU in the Region in terms of capacity and area with 450 m².
The expansion of beds will allow for more hospitalizations of children and an increase in elective surgeries, such as pediatric heart surgeries, which will have fixed beds. "The expansion will also help with problems arising from seasonal diseases, such as hospitalizations of children with severe respiratory conditions, especially respiratory syncytial virus [RSV] during autumn/winter", explains the head of the pediatrics ward, professor Terezinha Tresoldi.
For the HC superintendent, professor Antonio Gonçalves Filho, the new area represents a very important leap in quality and patient safety. "The configuration of the space took into account many details such as humanization and the well-being of teams, patients and companions, making the place more efficient and resolving", he assesses.
It is the first time that the area has been renovated since the construction of the hospital in 1985, and the aim was to double the number of beds from 10 - now qualified in the Regional Urgency and Emergency Network (RUE) - to a total of 20. For To carry out the works, it was necessary to renovate another ward that has housed the 10 beds to date. This is one of the biggest renovations carried out in the last 15 years at the hospital.
“The renovation consisted of the total internal demolition of the current ICU, and then reconstruction, taking into account the current architectural concept, where the nursing station is located in the central area and the beds around it, enabling the view of the beds in 360°, which facilitates visual contact with each patient”, explains Sérgio Lacerda, engineer and director of the Engineering and Maintenance Division (DEM) at HC.
The engineer explains that the main objectives of the renovation, in addition to expanding the number of beds, which doubled the current capacity, were the adaptations to physical legal standards (AVCB and VISA) and infrastructure, the humanization and modernization of the space. “The unit will also have exclusive seating and medical comfort areas, as well as a comfort room for parents, with bathrooms and changing rooms”, he details.
