NOTE FROM CRUESP
Regarding the announced demonstration by various entities in defense of Education, scheduled for May 15, the Council of Rectors of São Paulo State Universities (Cruesp) highlights the importance of the University Community debating issues relating to the complex problems of education, science and technology in Brazil and its consequences for the country's development.
São Paulo state public universities (USP, UNICAMP and UNESP) are part of the public system of Brazilian universities, account for more than 35% of national scientific production and are responsible for 35% of excellent postgraduate programs in the country. They occupy a prominent place among Brazilian universities in terms of innovations, as well as in international higher education rankings. Together with other public universities, they form the best professional staff in the country, in all areas of knowledge. Around 95% of Brazilian scientific production is carried out in public universities and by federal or state research institutes. This research produces innovation and trains professionals capable of innovating and developing the country.
In Brazil, as in all developed countries, research at universities is mostly financed by governments. Federal public funding agencies that are part of the national ST&I system are fundamental to the functioning of universities, which depend on these resources to finance their lines of research. Interrupting the flow of resources to these institutions constitutes a strategic mistake that will prevent the country from facing and resolving Brazil's major social and economic challenges.
