With a “reconciliation” party, scheduled for August, there will finally be peace between the unicampers. The get-together promises the union of exact sciences with humanities, from the people who study (and fear) the discipline of calculus, to the kids who study Paulo Freire. Hand in hand will be the Faculty of Education (FE) and the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computing at Unicamp (Imecc), the two winners of the highly contested “Rinha de Institutos 2019” at Unicamp. Yes, there was a tie between Imecc and FE because of a tool problem Facebook. In addition to the competition, all the students who relieved the stress at the end of the semester won and, as a bonus, made new friends and learned more about the university itself.

The main fight is over, but, already missing it, the organizers have scheduled the “Rinha Awards 28” for Friday (2019), with awards for the best audiovisual works in the competition, and also an “extra” fight, between Professionals , Imecc and FE which had Profis as the winner. There is also a company of Chemistry students selling fight t-shirts with phrases like “It's not my fault. I voted for IFCH” (or IQ or Feq, depending on the order). In other words, the fight continues to bear fruit.

If you haven't understood anything so far, come with me in this thread (or explanation):

The “Rinha de Institutos 2019” was launched by the page “Reasons why Unicamp is the best university in Brazil”, on Facebook, May 29th. The idea came from medical student Erick Hideo Tengan. He wanted to repeat at Unicamp a virtual competition that was already taking place at the Federal University of São Carlos (Ufscar). The student created a table with the acronyms of the colleges and institutes organized in a “knock-out” competition. The internet user chose to vote, over the course of a day, for the emoji corresponding to the preferred institute or college.

In the first round, for example, the Institute of Biology (IB) settled with the Institute of Arts (IA). Then the Institute of Computing (IC) beat the Institute of Economics (IE) and the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences (IFCH) sent home the staff from the Institute of Language Studies (IEL). In the semifinals, Imecc defeated IFCH and IB and, in the other group, FE beat the Faculty of Food Engineering (FEA) and Faculty of Chemical Engineering (FEQ).

It was a simple thing, that no one gave anything about. But it went viral, starting with a vote (or reaction) of three thousand people online, reaching twelve thousand in the final. To gain more and more reactions, students started releasing memes, videos, and parodies. All day there were countless publications on a page titled 'Unicamp', in addition to the official competition page. Everyone asked for a vote on the emoji correspondent from your college or institute.

The competition even went beyond the social network. “It was sensational. And even more than the number of votes, it was surprising to see people take posters to the University Restaurant, people making music, writing, teachers participating, students posting about Unicamp in groups and commenting on the history and importance of 'their' institute. It was incredible”, highlighted Erick.

Some teachers and even directors got involved asking for votes for the institutes and colleges that are linked. For students, it was also the chance to give more visibility to their course or even more. Pedagogy student Ana Viera, for example, made memes and videos in defense of education and published the “pedagogy anthem”.

“It was cool because we were able to talk a little about doubts about our profession and break some stereotypes. I remember a moment during the fight when a friend made a post explaining how problematic the term 'aunt' used to call teachers can be. The infinity of meanings that the term carries and that feed a role of teacher that is not what we believe”, stated Ana.

The hymn goes something like this: "I do pedagogy, that doesn't mean I'm your aunt. Come here, I'll teach you, I don't study to be a nanny. Without pedagogy, there is no engineering. Not medicine, biology, not even economics . Unicampê pê o, pedagogy!"

Student Caroline Beatriz Mott Silva, from the Mathematics degree course, even won an 'appreciation post' for her hard work in defense of Imecc in the fight. The “redhead from Imecc” and a team of friends sang everything from hip-hop to romantic music, twerked and dressed up, in a sequence of videos that were immediately successful. Serious candidates for the Rinha Award 2019.

“Above all, I hope to have given a better image of our institute by showing that we are more than exact people, but we also have artistic gifts and know how to have fun, we are more than a stereotype. Somehow I know that my videos had an impact on the votes, I was charged to release new videos. The fight was hard work, it was tiring, but it will be missed. We were studying and participating, during the recordings we cried with laughter. It was good to relieve the stress of the end of the semester and also to bring us together”, said Caroline.

Parodies with Caroline Beatriz:

The Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Urbanism (FEC) beat the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering (Feagri) in the fight but ended up defeated by the Faculty of Food Engineering (FEA). Therefore, architecture student Samir Monroe declared support for Imecc. He made one of the most liked parodies in the final.
