Unicamp is the best-placed Latin American representative in the Golden Age University Rankings 2019 [universities in a golden age, founded after the Second World War], repeating the performance achieved in last year's edition. The University appears in 68th position among the 271 institutions analyzed. In 2018, it ranked 67th. The ranking is organized by the British publication Times Higher Education (THE), specialized in evaluating higher education schools. The result was announced on Wednesday afternoon (26).
In the list organized by THE, the second best-rated Brazilian institution is the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), which occupies position 101-150 [from 101st place onwards, universities are presented in groups]. Another 12 universities in Brazil are part of the ranking. Dean Marcelo Knobel welcomed the result. “We maintained a great position, once again highlighting the role of public universities in the country’s development. Unicamp, despite still being quite young, occupies a prominent place in the international universities scenario”, he pointed out.
The University of California, San Diego, tops the table for the third year in a row. In addition to achieving the highest overall score, the North American university also received the highest score in the research environment. The Australian National University remains in second place, while the Chinese University of Hong Kong, which leads the international pillar, is third in the overall assessment. Seoul National University ranks fourth overall and is number one for teaching environment.
Japan is once again the most represented nation, with 46 universities, up from 28 last year, but the highest-ranked institution, Teikyo University, only ranks 71st. The Golden Age University Rankings uses the same methodology as THE World University Rankings, which makes the global ranking of universities. 13 criteria are considered, which evaluate the performance of institutions in four areas: teaching, research, international insertion and interaction with industry.
