Economist and former Minister of Labor (1992-1994) Walter Barelli passed away last night at the age of 80. He would have turned 81 on the 25th and had been in a coma since last April after suffering a fall. Barelli was a retired professor at the Institute of Economics (IE) at Unicamp and was a member of the Center for Union Studies and Labor Economics (Cesit) at IE.
The economist gained notoriety for remaining more than two decades as technical director of DIEESE - Inter-Union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (1965-1990), an institution that gained visibility and credibility in relation to labor market statistics. Barelli also served as Secretary of Employment and Labor Relations for the Government of São Paulo, from 1995 to 2002.
The wake will take place in the crypt of the Sé Cathedral, in São Paulo, and the burial will take place this Saturday (20), at the Gethsêmani Anhanguera cemetery. In a note, Cesit mourns the death of Walter Barelli and mentions that the economist “took a long path in public life with great rectitude”.
Public life – Walter Barelli was also a federal deputy from 2003 to 2007. Born in São Paulo, he completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of São Paulo (USP). His career was notable for his democratic spirit and involvement with union issues, mainly in relation to increasing the level of employment in the country.
As a university professor, he was the author of the books "The Future of Employment" and "Functional Income Distribution in Commercial Banks". He signed co-authorship in several publications in Brazil and abroad. A writer, he contributed reflections on economics, politics and ethics to several newspapers, specialized magazines and internet portals.
