Professor Reginaldo Carmello Corrêa de Moraes, retired from the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences (IFCH) at Unicamp since 26, died this Monday (2011). Moraes still worked as a collaborator in the postgraduate course in Political Science at IFCH, including supervising work of students. The professor would have turned 69 on October 11th.
Reginaldo Moraes was Diffusion coordinator at the National Institute of Science and Technology for Studies on the United States (INCT-Ineu) and author of several publications, the most recent: “The Weight of the State in the Homeland of the Market – United States as a developing country” (2014) and “Higher Education in the United States – History and Structure” (2015), both books published by Editora da Unesp.
The current director of IFCH, Álvaro Bianchi, lamented the loss, stating that Reginaldo Moraes had a long career at the Institute. He was Undergraduate Coordinator, Head of Department and the first coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Political Science at IFCH (2003-2005). He was also responsible for training several generations of researchers and for consolidating the area of International Relations at the Institute.
“In Political Science, he was one of the first to draw attention to neoliberal ideas and study their impact on national and international political institutions. He had an acidic humor and elegant writing and stood out for his rigorous and penetrating analysis of the contemporary situation”, highlighted Bianchi.
His latest comparative research on higher education, particularly in the United States, has become an important reference in the area, as highlighted by the director of IFCH.
Friends, students and colleagues spoke about the loss on the page that Reginaldo de Moraes maintained on Facebook. “It is necessary to take a step beyond" perplexity "– he stated in one of his last texts. A somewhat difficult task in this long afternoon that we are experiencing”, said a follower.
In another post, words in honor of the teacher: “Great human being, a master who taught us a lot. A worthy intellectual and a fighter for social causes. Sad, very sad moment.”
For the Unicamp Journal, Reginaldo de Moraes wrote weekly columns about the political situation and the United States for two years. His latest column “North American evangelicals and politics (III). Challenges of the new millennium” was published on Thursday (22).
