Four theses defended at Unicamp were awarded the Capes Theses Award 2019 and another 10 studies received honorable mention, according to results released by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes). The award is offered by the institution for the best doctoral theses defended in 2018 and selected in each of the 49 areas of evaluation recognized in Postgraduate Programs.
The dean of Postgraduate Studies, professor Nancy Lopes Garcia, celebrated the award received by Unicamp. “The excellence of the Postgraduate Program was recognized”, she highlighted. According to the professor, amidst the news that caused so much apprehension in the academic world in recent months, there was great satisfaction upon receiving the news. “With these awards, the University reinforces its commitment to research with a high level of academic excellence and to the advancement of knowledge for São Paulo and Brazilian society”, she celebrated.
The list of recipients highlights Unicamp's doctoral work in the areas of Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Geosciences and Philosophy. “This fact demonstrates the breadth of topics covered in postgraduate studies”, analyzes the dean. Even when looking at the works awarded honorable mentions, the professor highlights, the diversity of the awards received becomes even more explicit. These are researches in the areas of Public Health, Dentistry and Nursing, including Agricultural, Electrical and Food engineering, involving Natural Resources (Biodiversity and Biosciences of Bioactive Product Technology) and Human Sciences (Sociology) and Applied Linguistics.
Awards
The authors of the 49 winning theses receive a scholarship for a post-doctoral internship for a period of one year and their supervisors receive the amount of R$3 to participate in academic events. Those selected also compete for the Grand Prize, which selects three works, one for each main area of knowledge – Humanities, Life Sciences and Exact, Technological and Multidisciplinary Sciences. The three winning theses of the Grand Prize offered by the Serrapilheira and Ayrton Senna institutes will be announced in November. The Fulbright Commission and the Carlos Chagas Foundation will also offer additional awards.
The evaluation committees also selected another 93 works that were highlighted with honorable mention. This year, in particular, the institution registered a record number of applications with 1140 applications. The awards ceremony will take place at Palácio do Planalto, on a date to be defined by Capes.
