This Wednesday (18), at 10 am, in the auditorium of the Hospital de Clínicas (HC) of Unicamp, the ceremony to formalize the partnership between Unicamp and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will take place for the delivery of new equipment to the Laboratory of Molecular Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases (LEMDI) of the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM) Unicamp.
The event will be attended by the consul general of Japan in Brazil, Yasushi Noguchi; the rector of Unicamp, Marcelo Knobel; the director of the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM) at Unicamp, Luiz Carlos Zeferino and the coordinator of LEMDI, the professor and infectious disease doctor at FCM, Maria Luiza Moretti, as well as other authorities from the University and Japan.
The agreement between the institutions was signed in 2017 and provides for investments of around US$5 million over five years to carry out clinical research projects in infectious diseases. With the donated resources, PCR exam equipment, photodocumenters, freezers, hoods, laminar flow, among other instruments for preserving and collecting fungi were purchased. In 2020, a high-performance sequencer valued at US$500 is expected to arrive, which will be available to other FCM laboratories.
“With the new equipment, it will be possible to diagnose fungal infections early at the molecular level and to understand the resistance of these fungi to better adapt treatment. Furthermore, in Brazil the project involves researchers and professionals from the Hospital de Clínicas (HC) at Unicamp, the municipal hospitals Mário Gatti and Ouro Verde, and the Centro Infantil Boldrini”, said Maria Luiza Moretti.
