Unicamp received the “Q1 Magazine Publications” award from Web of Science Group, referring to the research excellence represented by publication in high-impact journals. Delivery took place during the event Research Excellence Awards Brazil, promoted by Clarivate Analytics, at the beginning of September, in Brasília. Ana Carolina Spatti, doctoral student at the Department of Scientific and Technological Policy (DPCT) at the Institute of Geosciences (IG), received the award on behalf of the University. The delivery to the rector of Unicamp, Marcelo Knobel, took place on Thursday, 19th, shortly before the opening of the IG's 40th anniversary celebrations.
The event in Brasília sought to identify and highlight research excellence in Brazil in a global context, highlighting key international and industry collaborations and research contributions from universities and research institutes. Among the conferences, topics such as Brazilian scientific production indexed in Web of Science and Scielo, policies Open Access and policies for evaluating scientific production.
Ana Carolina participated in the event financed by FAPESP within the scope of the project “Systematic evaluation of impacts of Science, Technology & Innovation actions and programs”, of which she is part. The postgraduate student, who does ethnography in innovation agencies at public universities during her doctorate at DPCT, supervised by professor Milena Serafim, was invited to receive the award on behalf of Unicamp. “It was exciting to receive the award, mainly because I had completed my entire academic career at Unicamp”, says the student who has a degree in Public Policy Management and also in Administration and a master's degree in Applied Human and Social Sciences from the University of Campinas.
For the rector, Marcelo Knobel, the award was a good surprise. “We were not notified of the award. I just have to thank our student for representing us,” he said. Unicamp competed with USP and UFRJ - institutions with the best performance in the category. “This is an important award for publication in reputable magazines. Competition with USP and UFJR is always positive. It's good competition. The important thing is to show the excellence of public universities, how much they represent for the country today and how fundamental they are for our future”, he assessed. Unicamp also competed with USP and UFRJ in the “Collaboration with Industry” category, won by the University of São Paulo.
During the event, the report “Research in Brazil: Promoting excellence”. This analysis was prepared by Web of Science for Capes, with data extracted from the citation index itself. Brazilian research works published between 2013 and 2018 were analyzed, with illustrative examples indicating the potential impact of Brazilian research and science policies. For Ana Carolina, “there was no more opportune moment to showcase the excellence of Unicamp’s research”, she concluded.
