Unicamp receives this Wednesday (9) the president of the National Association of Directors of Federal Higher Education Institutions (Andifes) and rector of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), João Carlos Salles, for a conference on “The Crisis of University". The event is part of the program of the cycle “The Brazilian Crisis”, organized by the Institute of Advanced Studies (IdEA) at Unicamp, and will be held in the Auditorium of the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM).
Graduated in Philosophy (1985), Master in Social Sciences (1992) and Doctor in Philosophy (1999), Salles has extensive experience in university management and academic production and has been rector of UFBA since 2014. At a time of attacks on public university education, cut of funds and disregard for the production of knowledge, Salles will discuss the importance of university mobilization and the broad debate on these themes and on the defense of the autonomy and diversity of this model.
João Carlos Salles presided over the National Association of Postgraduate Studies in Philosophy (Anpof) between 2002 and 2006 and is currently president of the Inter-American Philosophy Society (SIF). He is also a member of the editorial board of more than two dozen journals and is a member of the Academia de Letras da Bahia and the Academia de Ciências da Bahia.
“The Brazilian Crisis” is an initiative that aims to bring important names from different areas of knowledge to Unicamp as a way of stimulating the discussion of current topics in search of diagnoses and solutions for the various crises that afflict the country's life. Every month, the event features a lecture by one or two experts, who will address relevant topics with space for debate with the public.
The first conference took place on September 18th, with the economist Luiz Gonzaga Belluzzo, retired professor from the Unicamp Institute of Economics, speaking on “The Economic Crisis”. In his talk, Belluzzo discussed how transformations in the global economy directly reflect on the Brazilian scenario of stagnation, deindustrialization and the rise of financial capital.
During the opening of the conference cycle, the rector of Unicamp, Marcelo Knobel, highlighted the importance of the University stimulating debate on national problems and seeking solutions. “We are at a time when we need to diagnose, comment and discuss the different crises we are going through – which, unfortunately, seem eternal – and propose possible solutions.”
Alongside Knobel, Carlos Vogt, president of IdEA's Scientific and Cultural Council, recalled at this ceremony Unicamp's tradition of organizing major events to reflect on the political, economic, social and cultural scenarios for more than three decades, as “Brazil 21st Century”, carried out in 1988 and 1989, and “Brazil: Political Memory”, in 1987, bringing together testimonies from political protagonists in the period of redemocratization, under the coordination of journalist Paulo Markun. Former president of the Padre Anchieta Foundation (2007-2010) and experienced journalism professional who currently divides his time between Portugal and Brazil, Markun will be the mediator of the cycle “A Crise Brasileira” this semester.
Also confirmed for the second semester are lectures by educator Mozart Neves Ramos (“Education”, on October 23) and diplomat Rubens Ricupero (“International Relations”, on November 6). Registration for the conference with philosopher João Carlos Salles can be done at IDEA website.
