It was launched by the Dean of Undergraduate Studies (PRG) from Unicamp a edict to encourage hybrid teaching in the university's undergraduate courses, through support for the production of videos that can be used by teachers as teaching resources. The idea is that these materials can now be used in classes in the 1st semester of 2020.
All professors of Undergraduate courses, from any area of knowledge, can register. The approved projects will have the support and infrastructure of the Educational Technologies Management Group (GGTE) for planning how videos can be inserted into the pedagogical projects of the subjects, scripting, recording and editing the materials. The organization has a studio equipped for recording and editing videos. According to Marco Antonio Garcia de Carvalho, GGTE coordinator, the objective is for teachers to have all the support they need to develop the projects. "What we want is to let the teacher take care of the content and for us to do the operational, executive work. As much as possible, free the teacher so that he can focus on the content of the class he is going to prepare", explains Marco Antonio.
In total, R$60 will be made available by PRG for the development of projects worth up to R$10. However, Marco Antonio comments that project costs tend to be much lower, which is why the GGTE teams will also guide teachers so that resources can be optimized and include as many proposals as possible.
Incentive to innovation
The use of technological resources for teaching activities is already a reality in Unicamp's undergraduate courses. For five years, students and teachers have relied on the so-called Moodle and Google Classroom virtual learning environments. However, Marco Antonio comments that the projects come from isolated and individual teacher initiatives. He explains that the notice is, therefore, a first institutional action by the university to encourage innovation in the classroom and, because of this, it integrates the actions foreseen by the RenovaGRAD - Support Program for Undergraduate Teaching Coordinations.
The coordinator also emphasizes that the objective is not to replace face-to-face classes with distance activities, but for videos to facilitate teaching. "We don't want to transform the teacher's in-person class into a virtual class, but rather ensure that the student has another resource available to study, learn and develop", argues Marco Antonio.
He cites as an example the possibility of teachers being able to implement active methodologies in their classes, such as the flipped classroom resource. "The teacher will be able to present the content through a video, in advance, the student can watch the video, there can be a text associated with the video, there can be a support exercise, and on the day of the class the teacher can explore other possibilities, discuss the topic further, guide students to delve deeper into a topic, take advantage of the topic to explore it in a laboratory experiment", he explains.
Another advantage is that the teaching materials developed through the notice are not exclusive for use in the disciplines. If desired, teachers can use them in extension courses and MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), available online to all interested parties, or even make them available on a YouTube channel, for example.
Interested teachers can send their projects until November 18th to the email prg@reitoria.unicamp.br with the subject “Hybrid Teaching Notice”. The selection of projects will take place until the end of November. So that the videos can be used in classes in the 1st semester of 2020, recordings should begin in February. The GGTE informs that it is available to teachers who want to ask questions about what they can propose and how they should present their projects.
