Born in Pindamonhangaba (SP), Ciro Gomes graduated in Law from the Federal University of Ceará (UFCE), having held the positions of governor of Ceará (1991-1994), minister of Finance (1994) and of National Integration (2003-2006 ) and federal deputy (2007-2011). He ran for president of the Republic in the 1998, 2002 and 2018 campaigns, when he came in third place, for the Democratic Labor Party (PDT).
He was a professor at the Vale do Acaraú University (UVA), in Sobral, between 1980 and 1982, and at the University of Fortaleza (Unifor), between 1985 and 1987, teaching subjects such as Tax Law and Constitutional Law. He is the author of three books in the area of political economy: “In the Country of Conflicts” (1994), “The Next Step – A Practical Alternative to Neoliberalism” (1995) and “A Challenge Called Brazil” (2002). He also served as a visiting scholar at Harvard Law School (1995-1996).
“The Brazilian Crisis” is an initiative that aims to bring important names from different areas of knowledge to Unicamp as a way of stimulating the discussion of current topics in search of diagnoses and solutions for the various crises that afflict the country's life. Every month, the event features a lecture by one or two experts, who address relevant topics with space for debate with the public.
