The Permanent Commission for the Unicamp Entrance Exams (Comvest) closed this Monday, January 13th, the second phase of the Unicamp 2020 Entrance Exam, with the Mathematics test, the interdisciplinary questions of Human Sciences and Natural Sciences, in addition to the specific test related to the chosen course. In total, 12.106 candidates took the exam and the abstention rate, at 10,9%, was the lowest since the 2012 Entrance Exam. Last year, abstention recorded on the second day of the second phase was 13,6%. This year, of the 13.589 approved for the second phase, 1.483 students did not attend. In Campinas, abstention reached 9% and in São Paulo 11%. The city with the lowest absentee rate this year was Jundiaí, with just 7,8%.
According to the director of Comvest, José Alves de Freitas Neto, one of the explanations for the low rate of absentees could be the reduction of the second phase of the Unicamp Entrance Exam from three to two days. “It was one of our objectives to hold a test that did not last for several days, considering that many candidates work or have other activities throughout the week, but the main aspect that the low abstention demonstrates is that the candidates identified with the new proposal of proof”, assessed José Alves.
On the second day, the tests presented very current themes and allowed candidates to identify themselves in different situations, such as the question that asked them to go back through a time tunnel to advise political leaders on the topic of oil and waste. “This is a type of question that stimulates reasoning and the production of knowledge that is applied in the lives of students and society in general”, stated José Alves.

Social phenomena such as denialism in the field of History were present in the test and, according to the director of Comvest, demonstrate Unicamp's concern in relation to the values that the University defends such as the valorization of science for the existence of a democratic society. “An interesting question was asking candidates to analyze the paradox of living in a society marked by information and, at the same time, having space on the internet for theories that deny the Holocaust, for example,” he pointed out.
In this sense, according to José Alves, Unicamp signals that the simple circulation of information does not translate into knowledge. “Therefore, we must be more attentive to what we read and incorporate into our repertoire”, he concluded.
The tests are available on the Comvest website (www.comvest.unicamp.br) and the expected answers will be published on the internet, starting on Thursday (16/1). The first call will be announced on February 10th, for electronic registration on February 11th. Up to 10 calls are planned.
