A resolution was published this Thursday (16) in the Official Gazette of SP that ensures the right of transvestite and transsexual students, teachers and employees to use their social names in records, documents and actions in the functional and academic life of Unicamp. The measure was adopted in accordance with other standards that already provide for this right, including the State Decree No. 55.588/2010, which guarantees transvestites and transsexuals the right to be addressed by their social name in public bodies of the State.
According to Ana Maria Almeida, coordinator of Advisory Committee to Combat Discrimination Based on Gender and/or Sexuality and Sexual Violence at Unicamp, the resolution is the result of extensive work, begun in 2017, to develop a policy to combat sexual violence at the university. "The preparation of the resolution included the participation of segments of the community directly involved with the issue, as well as the participation of sectors of the administration responsible for implementation", explains the professor.
The social name is the one with which transvestites and transsexuals identify themselves on a daily basis and which is in accordance with their gender identities. According to the resolution, whoever expresses an interest in using it will have their civil first name - the one shown on the birth certificate - replaced by their social name, followed by their civil surname. The replacement will apply to registrations, internal communications, university email addresses, functional and academic documents, among others. In diplomas and school transcripts, the civil name will be mentioned, respectively, on the back and at the end of the document, as a note. In the case of theses and dissertations, the final versions will be published only under the social name. The resolution also guarantees the right of transvestites and transsexuals to always be called and referred to by their social name in university environments.
Candidates who register for public competitions and selection processes organized by Unicamp will also benefit from the resolution. In the case of the entrance exam, the social name can be used since the 2016 edition of the test. According to data from the Permanent Commission for Entrance Exams (Comvest), 33 candidates reported being transgender this year.
The adoption of the use of the social name at Unicamp will be accompanied by a series of actions to raise awareness of the importance of diversity, with several activities already taking place since the commission's work began. Ana Maria explains that the program is aimed at all members of the university community. "The program includes courses, lectures, conversation circles with smaller groups, campaigns, among others. These events aim to clarify the community regarding the legal aspects of the issue and the university's expectations regarding behaviors and attitudes. guarantee a environment characterized by mutual respect, where all members of the Unicamp community can develop their potential and employ their talents in studies and work with peace of mind and security", he highlights.
