Among those approved in the first call for Admission 2020, Unicamp included 663 students from outside the State of São Paulo, which makes the percentage of students from other States the highest ever recorded by the Permanent Commission for Entrance Exams (Comvest). Of the 3.412 approved in the first call, 19,4% are from outside the State of São Paulo. In the previous year, Unicamp had 11,9% students from other states enrolled. The index contributed to increasing the national coverage of the Unicamp Entrance Exam and other forms of entry, reaching 26 units of the Federation. Nine more call-ups are still planned until the end of March.
The data reflects the new entry modalities for the University's undergraduate courses, implemented in 2019, according to the director of Comvest. José Alves de Freitas Neto celebrates the fact that the Commission registered almost 20% of those approved coming from different parts of the country and assesses that “With the Olympic Vacancies and ENEM, we have the opportunity to increase the diversity of students in terms of place of origin . In the past, Unicamp was recognized for its National Entrance Exam. With the resumption of tests in several capitals, since the 2018 Entrance Exam, and with the forms of entry adopted since last year, Unicamp seeks the best students wherever they are and, in this way, strengthens its image as one of the main universities in the country”, he commented.
Currently, the Unicamp Entrance Exam is held in five capitals and in the Federal District and the Indigenous Entrance Exam in three other states, so that Unicamp selects students in a total of nine units of the Federation, that is, 1/3 of the country. The figure below shows the percentage of students approved in the first call, distributed by regions.

Lael Viana Lima is from Teresina, Piauí, and was approved for course 51 – Mathematics, Applied and Computational Mathematics, Physics and Physical Engineering. He took the Unicamp 2020 Entry in two modalities: the traditional entrance exam and the Olympic Vacancies, and was called in the first call for the modality that uses only performance in scientific competitions to classify candidates. Upon learning of the approval, this Wednesday (5/2), Lael celebrated. “I always liked mathematics and when I started looking for courses in the area, I tried to find out more about Course 51 and I think it is one of the best options. Furthermore, I already knew about Unicamp and its quality. I’m very happy and the penny is still sinking in!”, he stated.
Lael is still studying, together with her family, whether it will be possible for her to come to Campinas and they are evaluating issues such as housing and the logistics for the move. Regarding the idea that students from other regions of Brazil have of São Paulo and Campinas, Lael said that she often believes there is a mistaken view. “I don’t think there’s as much information about the region and the study possibilities available here. Furthermore, many families here are unable to invest in a good education for their children, which could end up keeping many students away from attending large universities like Unicamp,” she said.
Diversity
According to Comvest, the analysis of the profile of those approved indicates the new test model adopted in the Unicamp 2020 Vestibular and the diversification of entry modalities (Enem, Olympic Vacancies and Indigenous Vestibular) as crucial in maintaining the goals defined, in 2017, by the Council University student in relation to social inclusion. “There are several ways to read the results: global data and data by course. In global data, we had a small decrease in public school students from 48,7% in 2019 to 48,2% that year. However, when we look at the data by course, we notice that 47 courses have more than 45% of those called from public schools”, observes José Alves.
Data by course is available on the Comvest website and in the table.
In the Unicamp 2020 Entrance Exam, the traditional entrance exam represented 75,7% of the vacancies and the Enem modality accounted for 18,7% of the total vacancies offered. The other 5,5% was divided between the Indigenous Entrance Exam (2,78%) and the Olympic Vacancies (2,72%).
Regarding the inclusion of self-declared black and brown students, the data shows that although there are 35,2% among those approved in the first call, the percentage of those who chose to participate in the ethnic-racial quota system is lower: 28,8% . In the opinion of the director of Comvest, this is a peculiar fact, considering that quotas play an important role as a public policy capable of increasing the representation of the black population of the State of São Paulo - 37% - at Unicamp.
“Most black students prefer to compete for places through broad competition and this results from two aspects: the candidates interviewed last year and, crossing this year's sociocultural profile, are candidates with similar school experience to those with broad competition in terms of income and type. school”, explained José Alves.
Before the adoption of ethnic-racial quotas by Unicamp, the rates of enrolled students who declared themselves black and mixed race varied between 14% and 20%.
