4th year Medicine student at Unicamp, Zeus Tristão, aged 30, volunteered to screen patients with Covid-19 symptoms who seek out the university's Hospital das Clínicas. He is part of a large number of students at the end of their course in the Health areas who join the ranks of those working in the war against the pandemic across the country. "I chose to study Medicine to take care of others and that is the reason why I am available in this frontline".
The students presented themselves as volunteers even before the call made by the Ministry of Health last week - the body issued a notice to call on Medicine, Nursing, Physiotherapy and Pharmacy students to work in primary care during the pandemic.
Young people say that, although they are not trained, they already have knowledge to share. Tristão is part of a group of 35 Health Expeditionaries who carry out screening in tents set up next to the hospital. "In-person care, taking people with mild symptoms to isolate at home and referring the most serious ones to a doctor and hospital. We are the guardians who direct patients to the care they need."
The college required personal protective equipment and they took a course to use it. The group rotates three students per shift.
