Are now open inscriptions for Pre-ONHB 2020, a compact, free and open-to-the-public version of the National Olympiad in Brazilian History (ONHB), a project carried out by the State University of Campinas (Unicamp). The initiative was taken after the 12th edition of ONHB was postponed to the second semester due to the coronavirus pandemic. Registration can be made until April 30th.
The initiative emerged as a way to offer knowledge and entertainment at a time when most people are socially isolated. “Pre-ONHB 2020” will be similar to the original project, but in a more compact version. Instead of six, there will be four online phases in which participants must, between Monday and Friday, answer multiple choice questions and complete proposed tasks and challenges. The stages also provide for a smaller number of questions.
Unlike its original format, there will be no elimination at each stage of the competition. The participant will be able to take advantage of all the stages and at the end will receive a performance report.
The great difference of “Pre-ONHB 2020” is also the opportunity for anyone to register, without criteria of age, profession, education, etc. Registration can be individual, by team or by household – a modality in which people isolated in the same house will be able to participate together.
The coordinator of ONHB and professor at the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences (IFCH) at Unicamp, Cristina Meneguello, explains that the proposal came up with the aim of offering people an activity that is both study and fun during this period of isolation. “Many people who have already participated in ONHB will now be able to satisfy their nostalgia and have fun. It can also serve as training for the teams that will participate in the 12th edition, in addition to being open to other people who like and are interested in topics related to the History of Brazil”, she explains.
The tests are formulated by professors, postgraduate and undergraduate students linked to the History Department at Unicamp. The project brings content about the History of Brazil, but also integrates interdisciplinary themes such as geography, literature, archeology, urbanism, current affairs, in addition to proposing debates, analyses, reading, etc.
About the 12th edition of ONHB
Despite the postponement, the 12th edition of the National Olympiad in History continues with registrations open until May 31st. A new date for the competition has yet to be announced.
The measure was taken by the organizing committee as a way to avoid harm to participants and ensure equality between teams. This is because although the six phases of the competition are completely online, there is a need for interaction between students and contact with the teacher.
“We know that some of the ONHB participants use the school structure, such as computers and the internet, to take the test, which is unfeasible at this time when classes are suspended”, he stated. “We want to ensure that everyone has the structural conditions to take the test and, at this time when social isolation is recommended, this has become unfeasible,” he added.
