The Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computing (IMECC) at Unicamp, in 2017, launched a repository of teaching materials to support the main mathematics subjects in university education. The repository, which already has around 170 thousand users and recently exceeded 1,5 million hits, brings together exercises, video lessons and other content that help, for example, in complementing learning during remote teaching.
As explained by the person responsible for the repository, IMECC professor Marcelo Firer, although the internet provides a wide range of content, the repository's difference lies in the selection of material. “There is a huge amount of material available online, but this material varies greatly in quality. It is important to highlight that the repository brings selected, curated material and has things for many tastes.”
According to the teacher, it is very difficult for a person to learn only by studying online, the materials can help with learning. Thus, the idea was to create a qualified content aggregator to provide access to support materials. The contents currently refer to the basic mathematics subjects: Analytical Geometry, Differential and Integral Calculus of one or more variables.
For each subject, the repository has around 1.200 exercises and problems. In addition, there are more than 300 video classes, around 150 applets (demonstrations, generally made with Geogebra), links to approximately 1500 micro classes and short videos, class notes and tests and exams from several renowned universities in Brazil and the exterior.
Access
The cities that access the repository the most are: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Fortaleza, Campinas and Maputo. Marcelo also notes that 92% of users are Brazilian, but there are accesses from all Portuguese-speaking countries, such as Portugal, Angola, and also from countries such as the United States. “Access has been growing all the time, and increased during this period [of remote teaching], but it was already increasing in general every semester”, shares Marcelo.
Although the vast majority of accesses come from students, the audience for which the repository was designed, the professor points out that there are tools aimed at teachers, helping them to prepare lists of exercises and tests. To allow fellow teachers to adopt more than one bibliographic reference, there is also an equivalence table between the contents of the main textbooks of the subjects.
