The University Council (Consu) of Unicamp approved, in a session held virtually this Tuesday (24), the indication of granting the title of Professor Emeritus of the University to Carlos Henrique de Brito Cruz, retired professor at the Institute of Physics " Gleb Wataghin" (IFGW). Proposed by the current director of the Institute of Physics, professor Pascoal Giglio Pagliuso, the appointment was approved and celebrated by the entire Council, which recalled Brito Cruz's great contributions to Unicamp and to scientific research as a professor and director of IFGW, rector of Unicamp among 2002 and 2005 and scientific director of the São Paulo State Research Support Foundation.
"I am very happy and honored with this decision by the Unicamp University Council. Practically my entire academic career is linked to Unicamp, a university that offered me enormous opportunities. It is exciting that, upon completing a career at the institution, I receive this recognition", celebrated Brito Cruz.
Carlos Henrique de Brito Cruz has a degree in Electronic Engineering from the Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica (ITA), completed Masters and Doctorate courses at IFGW and carried out post-doctoral research in the United States at ATT Bell Laboratories. Throughout his career, he served as a visiting researcher at the Università Degli Studi in Rome and the Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris. Brito Cruz joined Unicamp as a professor in 1982. In addition to his academic and teaching activities, the professor held the positions of Director of IFGW between 1991 and 1994 and between 1998 and 2002, he was Pro-Rector of Research between 1994 and 1998 and Dean of Unicamp between 2002 and 2005.
Along with Fapesp, Brito Cruz was president of the Foundation between 1996 and 2002, later holding the position of Scientific Director of the institution until 2020. The professor is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and other scientific entities and associations around the world. Among the awards received by Brito Cruz in recognition of his performance, the following stand out: the Order of Scientific Merit, conferred by the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology (2000), the Order of Academic Palms, granted by the French Republic (2015), and the Order of the British Empire, United Kingdom (2015).
"The professor is a reference for several generations of IFGW researchers. Personally, as director, I will never forget his advice, guidance and suggestions, from my inauguration speech to quick interactions throughout my term, always precise", recalled Pascoal Pagliuso , Director of IFGW, who highlighted the fundamental role played by Brito Cruz in the scientific development of many researchers. "Professor Brito Cruz's extraordinary contributions to IFGW as Director, to Unicamp as Rector and to Fapesp and to the entire Brazilian scientific community as its Scientific Director are unquestionable. I express our gratitude to Professor Brito, for this brilliant career dedicated to IFGW, to Unicamp and Brazilian science", he highlighted.
"It was great to work at the Institute of Physics, to learn and live with so many brilliant colleagues, so many brilliant students, employees dedicated to the public university. As Pro-Rector of Research and as Rector, I was able to see how much it is worth for Brazil to have a university like Unicamp. My greatest joy is having participated and contributed to this institution", reinforces the new Professor Emeritus. The title award ceremony will be scheduled in due course.
