Unicamp declared this Friday (08) an official three-day mourning period in memory of the 200 deaths caused by Covid-19 in Brazil. The days of mourning begin on January 9th and the ordinance comes into force from the date of its publication.
This sad milestone was reached last Thursday (07) when more than 7.9 million people were already victims of this pandemic. The world has more than 88 million cases and 1.8 million deaths. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the coronavirus has left a trail of irreparable losses across the country.
For the Rectory of Unicamp, the situation experienced by the country, and which motivates the publication of the ordinance, is dramatic and unacceptable. According to rector Marcelo Knobel, this impressive number of victims should not be considered normal, representing more than data, lives lost and entire families in mourning. In addition to this absurd number of lives lost, there is one observation: Brazil is losing a little of itself, its history, and especially its people. And for all the people who suffer due to this regrettable situation, the saddened and unhappy University pays its solidarity and tribute. “We can never trivialize a significant number like this when it comes to human lives,” he commented. He reiterated the university's commitment to combating the disease, through its hospital complex, and its researchers, in different areas of knowledge.
