REPUDIATION NOTE
The Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) repudiates the statements, widely disseminated via audio on social media, with unfounded criticism of the vaccines that are beginning to be distributed in Brazil. This audio, attributed to a member of ABC, contains material that directly contradicts scientific knowledge about the mechanism of action and effects of vaccines available in the national territory.
Diversity of opinions is healthy and fundamental for the development of science. However, a position that contradicts the scientific method and ethical premises of observations and recommendations that may affect public health cannot be accepted.
Statements of this type are a disservice to science and society, disqualifying the process of vaccinating the population, at a particularly tragic time. We reiterate that Brazil will only win the war against COVID-19 if vaccination is massive, urgent and for everyone. The vaccines produced in the country have proven efficacy for this purpose.
This is a time that requires solidarity and lucidity. Misinformation and the politicization of medicines and vaccines victimize the Brazilian population.
