After producing the digital magazine Lupa Lupita, with the aim of disseminating scientific knowledge in the area of Biology, Unicamp students organize the event “Lupa Lupita in: The Microscopic World at Home”, which takes place on January 29th. The idea is to guide children and teenagers in carrying out simple scientific experiments and explain how certain phenomena occur. Registration is open until minutes before the start of the event and part of the proceeds will go towards the Friends of HC campaign. In addition to the event, registration gives access to the digital magazine.

“Why does bread dough rise? Why can soap kill some germs, bacteria and viruses? We want to bring this curious mind to this audience. They should ask these questions and it is not enough for them to say 'just because' when asked”, explains Unicamp Biological Sciences student Sophia Pivatto Serra. Sophia is a member of the junior company AlfaBio, which together with the junior company Verbalize, linked to the Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP), was responsible for both the magazine and the event, which already had its first edition in December 2020.

The student explains that the idea for the magazine came up in 2020, resulting in a 35-page publication, in digital format. Those who participate in the event can access the magazine. “We transformed the idea of a magazine into a scientific event for children aged 8 to 13 or so. The first edition comes with the idea of disseminating science in an easier way and with some experiments that are part of children's everyday lives, to bring science closer to their reality”, says Sophia. All event participants will receive access to the magazine so they can consult the experiments and information at any time.

The partnership between AlphaBio and Verbalize was due to the need to convey knowledge in the area of Biology in an accessible language and in a visually attractive way. The dialogue, for the UFOP Journalism course student, Isadora Lúcia, enabled rich learning. “Lupa Lupita was the first project I coordinated and it was an incredible experience, I had never had such close contact with a magazine, it was an enriching process and I will take everything I learned with me for the rest of my career.”

Proceeds donated to the Hospital de Clínicas

Tickets for the event cost R$15 reais and part of the money raised will go to the Friends of HC campaign, which seeks to raise funds to help the Hospital during this time of the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition to the experiments, there will also be a lecture with Biological Sciences graduate Emiliana Brotto Guidetti. The event takes place from 17pm to 18:35pm.
