Professor Antonio José de Almeida Meirelles, Tom Zé, was appointed rector of Unicamp, and will be the 13th rector of the University, with a four-year term. The appointment, made by the governor of São Paulo, João Doria, was published in the official diary of São Paulo this Thursday, April 15th. The inauguration of the new management will take place on April 19th.
“I would like to thank the community for the results of the consultation, Consu for confirming the list and the State Governor for the appointment”, says Tom Zé, who is a professor at the Faculty of Food Engineering at Unicamp and ran for rectorship on a ticket with professor Maria Luiza Moretti, from the Faculty of Medicine. They won with 51,97% of the votes in the second round.
The professor also lists commitments that management will assume. “I highlight three commitments that Luiza and I have made: providing full support to our health sector in the fight against the pandemic; strengthen the training of people and the generation of science and technology for our development, always with the aim of serving society, and recognizing our internal community as Unicamp's main wealth, with the valorization of the careers of teachers, staff and researchers and the strengthening student inclusion policies”.
Tom Zé has a bachelor's and master's degree in Food Engineering from Unicamp, and a doctorate in Thermal Process Engineering and Economic Sciences. He is a full professor at the Faculty of Food Engineering (FEA) at Unicamp, where he has been teaching since 1987. The professor was postgraduate coordinator between 2011 and 2014 and director of FEA between 2014 and 2018.
Maria Luiza Moretti is a doctor graduated from Unicamp, with a residency in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, a master's degree in Medical Sciences and a doctorate in Internal Medicine. She is a full professor at the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM) at Unicamp, where she has been teaching since 1980. Luiza was coordinator of the Medical Internship, the Research Committee and the Internationalization Office at FCM and also clinical director of the Hospital de Clínicas (HC) at Unicamp. Unicamp.
Consultation and triple stripe
The consultation for the new composition of Unicamp's rectory took place in two rounds. The first, contested by three teams, took place on March 10th and 11th. The second round took place on March 24th and 25th. Tom Zé's ticket, together with Maria Luiza Moretti, received 51,97% of the votes.
The triple list was drawn up and voted by the University Council (Consu) of Unicamp on April 6th, with Tom Zé as the leader. According to legislation, the University, through Consu, sends the names to the governor and it is up to him to make the appointment.
