It is the ethical and political duty of a public institution to defend the Democratic Rule of Law and the set of institutional guarantees that allow the exercise of citizenship and the protection of individuals. In this way, the State University of Campinas, in accordance with this duty, and in light of the events that occurred in the community of Jacarezinho, which victimized several residents and a public agent of the State, expresses its solidarity with all the families involved. It also highlights that a public security policy (preventive and repressive) that makes not only citizens, but security agents themselves vulnerable, needs to be reevaluated.
The necessary fight against crime cannot serve to legitimize the abuses continually practiced in such operations — summary executions, home invasions, injured or dead residents. It is worth remembering that, in these situations, the main victims are the residents of communities unassisted by the State, which further explains the social and economic asymmetries between the various segments of society. The recomposition of the social fabric is not done with moral dichotomies (hero versus criminal), but with intelligence, scientific method and public policies. Unicamp, aligned with the principles of the 1988 citizen constitution, reiterates that it is the State's commitment to take care of the well-being of its citizens, in particular, the most vulnerable communities.
