Neglect and abandonment are the main forms of violence suffered by elderly people living in Campinas. The biggest victims of this violence are women, most of the time with little education. Other types of violence that affect the lives of the elderly population are psychological, physical and financial attacks. In addition to these characteristics, there is a sad reality in these cases: home and family may not be safe environments for these people. More than 90% of cases of violence against the elderly occur at home and, in around 56% of episodes, the perpetrators of the attacks are children.
Data from the last 11 years were gathered in doctoral research developed in the Postgraduate Program in Gerontology at the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM) at Unicamp. They were collected from the Campinas Violence Notification System (SISNOV), from the City Hall. The work also shows that the city's situation reflects a greater reality experienced by the elderly population in the country.
