The presence of chemical compounds in the Amazon River water basin was studied by a team of researchers from the Silent Amazon project, which carried out the largest monitoring campaign for pharmaceuticals and other contaminants in Rio. Caffeine, nicotine, hormones, analgesics and psychostimulants are some of the substances present in water that put local species at risk. Chemical pollution is related to the lack of basic sanitation in urban groups and indicates the urgency of measures to reduce pollutant emissions.

In this edition of Repórter Unicamp, we spoke with the postdoctoral fellow at the Faculty of Technology at Unicamp, Rhaul de Oliveira, and with the professor at the Federal University of Amazônia, Andrea Waichman, who are part of the team of researchers. They talk about the results of the research, indicate the risks of contamination for the species and highlight the measures necessary to mitigate the impacts. Check out:

The report is also available on Rádio Unicamp as a podcast:

The Silent Amazon project, coordinated by Andreu Rico, includes researchers from Brazil, Spain, Italy and Norway. The name of the project aims to draw attention to the fact that problems that are often invisible to the naked eye can also have serious consequences. Find out more about Silent Amazon and check out the studies in full on the website silentamazon.com.
