The National Olympiad in History of Brazil (ONHB), held by the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), has started registration for its new project: the 1st National Olympiad in History of Brazil Open to All (ONHB-A), a version of the competition open to the public and which provides for different forms of participation. Registration continues until September 24th and is free for up to one team per public school.
The objective of the initiative is to expand the project to people who are not linked to educational institutions, but are interested in content about Brazilian History and current affairs that are offered in the ONHB test. The original version, aimed at students and teachers, will be maintained and will reach its 14th edition next year.
“We always receive many requests from former participants and university students for an open version. We did it in 2020 on an experimental basis with Pre-ONHB and had a very positive result. We decided to expand this year so that schools that are not yet participating can experience the Olympics”, explains the coordinator of ONHB and professor at the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences (IFCH) at Unicamp, Cristina Meneguello.
In total, four modalities are planned. In two of them, “individual” and “group”, there is no obligation to be linked to an educational institution and anyone aged 12 and over can register. In the “group” mode, interested parties can invite friends and family and form teams of two to six people.
The other categories, “training team” and “public training school” were designed so that students and teachers, whether or not they already participate in ONHB, can train, prepare or learn about the project which, in 2022, will hold its 14th edition.
Teachers and students from the 7th to 9th year of Elementary School, High School or EJA (Youth and Adult Education) can register in both modalities. In the “training team”, interested parties must form teams with three students and a teacher from public or private schools. In the “public training school” modality, teams can have one teacher and up to 12 students. In this category, registration is free and one team per school can participate.
ONHB-A: more compact version
Unlike the traditional competition, ONHB-A will have four phases held online and lasting six days each. It will also be leaner, with five multiple-school questions and one task in the first three phases. In the last stage, participants will perform a task.
Meneguello explains that the content is similar to the traditional competition, but in a version that demands less time and dedication from the participants. “ONHB-A demands less from participants and is a proposal so that friends and family can discuss the topics presented together and students can learn about the project.” The ONHB-A also does not provide for awards, with the delivery of medals.
