The construction of a Metropolitan Hospital, in an area of 40 thousand square meters of Fazenda Argentina, was the main topic of the 226th Meeting of the Development Council of the Metropolitan Region of Campinas (CD-RMC). The event, held at the Gymnasium of the Faculty of Physical Education (FEF-Unicamp) on the morning of last Tuesday (21/9), was attended by the rector, Antonio José de Almeida Meirelles, the general coordinator of the University, Maria Luiza Moretti, pro-rectors, the mayor of Jaguariúna and president of the CD-RMC, Gustavo Reis (MDB), the mayor of Valinhos, Lucimara Godoy Vilas Boas (PSD), as well as mayors and representatives from other cities in the region and members of state government departments.
After welcoming those present, professor Antonio José de Almeida Meirelles stated that the current management of Unicamp aims to “explore the many possibilities of a closer relationship with the population and governments of the cities that make up the RMC”. According to the rector, the University's transfer of the Argentine Farm area for the construction of the Metropolitan Hospital is yet another demonstration of Unicamp's relevance to the region and its spirit of partnership. “A study released at the beginning of this year by the General Coordination showed that Unicamp contributed to projects that generated R$13,8 billion in wealth for the Campinas region in 2019, a value that corresponds to 21% of the municipality’s Gross Domestic Product”, informed, also highlighting the institution's contribution to teacher training and projects in the areas of economics and planning.
The general coordinator, professor Maria Luiza Moretti, said that “the path of universities is their approach to society, and the RMC Mayors Council can be a great partner in developing a model in this sense”. She reinforced the defense of the construction of the Hospital and spoke of the need for the University to contribute to increasingly effective procedures in serving the population of the metropolitan area.
Project
The presentation of the project for the Metropolitan Hospital of the Campinas Region was carried out by doctor Oswaldo da Rocha Grassiotto, executive director of the Health Area at Unicamp. Grassiotto released figures relating to care offered under the coordination of the university in the administrative region of Health. The construction of the Metropolitan Hospital will be crucial for expanding care for this population ”, defended Grassiotto.
According to him, the Metropolitan Hospital, which will be technically managed by Unicamp, with elective and urgent care referred, will require an investment of around R$320 million. It is planned to offer 400 beds (100 of them for Intermediate Care Units and Intensive Treatment Units) in the new Hospital, to be opened within four years.
