Editora da Unicamp presents its I Virtual Fair. The event will take place between October 5th and 7th, 2021, with the theme “Books by the bucketload! ”. At the Fair, theReaders will have the opportunity to purchase books from Editora and 11 other university publishers (Edusp, EdUFSCar, Ediunesc and Editors from UnB, Unesp, UEPG, UFPA, UFG, UFLA and UFPR). All books will be at unmissable discounts. Check out a little more about each of the participating publishers.

In addition to the advantages of purchasing books, the Fair will have a broad and free cultural program, with the participation of several outstanding professionals. Check the schedule.

Among the attractions offered are a recital, a video testimonial, conversation circles and the launch of three highly current works: The rise of yeast, Fascism and big capital e Narratives of (re)existence. The transmission can be followed on the Unicamp Publisher on Youtube.

Read below testimonials about the books to be launched at the Fair:

The rise of yeast - launch on 5/10, at 17:30 pm.

"After more than 20 years of researching yeast, I came across Professor Nicholas Money's book, which tells the story of the ancient partnership between us humans and these simple and fascinating microbes. I then decided to take on the challenge of translating it into Portuguese, to contribute to scientific dissemination in our country. The book combines an attractive text full of curiosities, accessible to a non-specialist audience, with the academic practice of indicating sources of information. What would our civilization be without yeast bread and alcohol, which we know thanks to yeast? These and other aspects are covered in the book The rise of yeast, which I hope will generate pleasure, learning and fun for many readers in Brazil”. Andreas K. Gombert, professor at the Faculty of Food Engineering at Unicamp and translator of the work.

Fascism and big capital - launch on 6/10, at 12:30 pm.

"We are launching Fascism and big capital, by Daniel Guérin, a book of great and fair prestige and which, unfortunately, 80 years after its first edition, still remained unpublished in Brazil. It is a book full of ideas, based on rich research and which offers many clues to understand Brazil under the Bolsonaro government and Bolsonaroism.” Armando Boito Jr., professor at the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences at Unicamp.

Narratives of (re)existence - launch on 7/10, at 12:30 pm:

"The book brings together texts by Brazilian and foreign intellectuals, which, as Sidney Chalhoub said in his preface, bring 'the idea of narrative back to the world of knowledge'. They are black people, LGBTQIA+, indigenous and gypsy leaders, teachers and, above all, renowned intellectuals in their areas of activity, such as the writer Conceição Evaristo and the former minister and professor emeritus at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Nilma Lino Gomes. These are powerful narratives, which make the book a reference work for debates on anti-racism and the fight against historical inequalities in our country. I am very happy that we can launch this book at this moment in Brazil’s history and even more so with the beautiful work of this great publisher.” Amilcar Araujo Pereira, professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and organizer of the book.

In addition to the advantages when purchasing books, the Fair will have a broad and free cultural program, with the participation of several prominent professionals

Check out the interview with director of the Unicamp Publishing House and professor at the Institute of Language Studies (IEL-Unicamp), Edwiges Morato, about the Virtual Fair.

Publishing house How did the idea of holding a Virtual Fair come about?

Edwiges Morato: Editora da Unicamp has participated in Fairs, Biennials and Book Festivals since its foundation. In 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, these activities, essential for promoting the books in our catalogue, as well as for closer interaction with other publishers, did not stop happening, but were reduced. But we couldn't hold our annual party. The last version was in the second half of 2019.

With the experience acquired by Editora da Unicamp in virtual events promoted by Abeu, Edusp and Editora da Unesp, we think that, in 2021, it would be possible to organize a Book Fair, in which several university publishers would participate. For this Fair, the first in a virtual format organized by Editora da Unicamp, we will have three launches and also a cultural program, which will feature a conversation circle, soirees with brief reports from teachers, students and employees, about how they became readers, in addition to reading excerpts from works selected by the authors themselves.

A Unicamp Virtual Publisher Fair has two important and interconnected functions: organizing its own event, with the participation of other publishers, and focusing on interaction: between the Publisher and society, between authors and the public in general, and among members of the university community. This experience in a virtual format allows the Editora's multiple functions to be preserved, and even disseminated to a wider audience; such functions would be to display and sell the books in the catalogue, interact with other university publishers, promote new releases, encourage reading and book culture and disseminate knowledge of a university nature.

Publishing houseWhat are the objectives of the 1st Unicamp Publisher Virtual Book Fair?

Edwiges Morato: Among the objectives of the Fair are the dissemination of the Editora's catalogue, the sale of our books with special discounts, the improvement of the academic training of undergraduate and postgraduate students in the country, the promotion of debates on the presence of the book, printed or no, in the construction of knowledge in a digital era and socioeconomic crisis, the celebration of the various meanings of reading and the closer contact between authors and readers.

Publishing houseWhat are the challenges and advantages of an event like this being held virtually?

Edwiges Morato: The challenges are of a logistical nature, certainly. But there is also the challenge of arousing public interest in a context of co-occurrence of different types of virtual events.

Publishing houseIs the organization of future editions in the plans?

Edwiges Morato: The pandemic brought the reality of remote activities to the University, which ended up valuing already existing or possible hybrid social and academic experiences. Furthermore, the production and circulation of digital books relies on a virtual reality that also foresees distant readers and audiences. Although, traditionally, Fairs, Biennials and Book Festivals, for several good reasons, take place in person, virtual experiences added to them can be interesting, strategic and creative.

However, in 2022, when we will celebrate 40 years of Editora da Unicamp, we are looking forward to a beautiful in-person party, even to celebrate, at the University, the rediscovery of the joy of face-to-face coexistence, paraphrasing the verses of Carlos Drummond de Andrade.
