The rector of Unicamp, Antonio José de Almeida Meirelles, accompanied by the general coordinator of the University, Maria Luiza Moretti, met, this Monday morning (8), in the Rector's Office, with the federal deputy Alexandre Padilha (PT). Doctor, former university student and former Minister of Health, he was committed to supporting the construction of a new Metropolitan Hospital, which will serve residents of the Metropolitan Region of Campinas (RMC) and the Regional Health Directorates (DRS) 7 , 10 and 14. “I have eternal gratitude and commitment to the University that graduated me. I have forwarded amendments to the HC (Hospital das Clínicas) and the CAISM (Integrated Women's Care Center) and now we are going to work with the São Paulo bench and the Ministry of Health to build the new hospital”, said Padilha.
Professor Maria Luiza Moretti gave a brief presentation on the current reality of service and investment in the Health area at Unicamp. In addition to the need for new beds and more resources, the general coordinator recalled the pent-up demand for care generated by the Covid-19 pandemic. “We have allocated extra-budgetary resources to meet the needs of the Health sector. Through joint efforts, we are reducing the queues for surgery referrals. Now, we are looking for support for a project that can stretch our system”, explained Luiza, who is an infectious disease doctor.
Explaining the objectives of his administration, which is to dialogue and open the University to all sectors of society, Antonio Meirelles thanked the deputy for his support in sending resources to the health sector and said that a new hospital structure is needed to reorganize the system and meet RMC's demand. “HC was designed in the 1980s to serve the population of that time. With the same number of beds, we are serving a population that has grown a lot. Therefore, we are talking to all deputies, mayors and representatives of the State to create a new structure and allow Unicamp to maintain its reference in health care”, pointed out the dean.
Padilha made a commitment to defend the proposal with the parliamentary group of the State of São Paulo, which has 70 deputies. He will also work with the Ministry of Health in new negotiations regarding Unicamp's agreement with the SUS (Unified Health System). “For the 2022 budget, we are forwarding amendments to the HC and CAISM. And there is a commitment to work so that Unicamp advances in projects that will benefit the region's population. ”
