The National Olympiad in History of Brazil (ONHB), promoted by the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), won second place in the Péter Murányi Prize 2021-22, in the “Education” edition. The award was given in recognition of the Dicionário Excluded da História project. For this work, a group of participants from the 11th edition of ONHB, in 2019, carried out research on characters rarely studied in traditional historiography.

This year, the Péter Murányi Prize received 208 works from all over Brazil. The winners were selected by a jury composed of national and international institutions linked to the area of education, members of federal, state and private universities, personalities and members of society. Febrace (Brazilian Science and Engineering Fair) came first and the Future Scientist Program came third.

For Vera Murányi Kiss, president of the Péter Murányi Foundation, the entity that promotes the award, the work carried out by the History Olympiad highlights the importance of stimulating education for the country's overall development.

“This is a project that achieves several objectives, as, in addition to the specific contents of our history, it develops a critical view and an active reinterpretation of it”, he stated.

In the work proposed by ONHB, students from public and private schools, with the guidance of teachers, produced four pages of a textbook where they presented a character that they considered relevant, despite not having commemorative dates, monuments or highlights in the books.

The exercise allowed students at different levels to understand the impact of little-known historical characters. The works were made available on Olympics website.

Held since 2009, ONHB has brought public and private schools closer to universities, allowing young students to interact with the academic community.

“I was very happy for the recognition that the Award brings to our work and, mainly, to the work of Basic Education teachers and students across the country. We feel we are on the right path. It is a stimulus for us to continue... Our objective now is to continue, intensify and continue with the project”, says the coordinator of the History Olympiad and professor at the Institute of Philosophy and Human Science (IFCH) at Unicamp, Cristina Meneguello.
