Unicamp continues to rise in the ranking GreenMetric worldwide. The university went from 100th place in 2020 to 65th in 2021. Released annually by the University of Indonesia, the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking evaluates sustainability indicators in six categories: 1. Environment and infrastructure; 2. Energy and climate change; 3. Waste; 4. Water; 5. Transport; and 6. Teaching and research. In 2021 there were 956 participating universities.
Unicamp also rose three positions among the most sustainable universities in Latin America, now occupying 7th position. “The result is an important indication, which validates the university’s planning in search of a sustainable future”, says the architect and urban planner of the Executive Directorate of Integrated Planning (DEPI), Thalita dos Santos Dalbelo. She is the coordinator of Unicamp Master Plan, whose mission is to integrate the management of Unicamp as a sustainable university with the planning of its use and occupation.
In Brazil, Unicamp remains the third most sustainable university. The indicators evolved in four of the six categories: environment and infrastructure, water, transport and teaching and research. In the others, there was stability. “This shows the evolution of the university in search of the sustainability proposed in its Master Plan”, points out Dalbelo. The indicators with the worst performance were electricity consumption per total Campus population; annual percentage of the university budget invested in sustainability; number of sustainable energy sources in the campus and number of innovative programs to combat the pandemic.
According to Dalbelo, for 2022 the goal is to be among the 50 highest-scoring universities in the world. The Action Plan to achieve this objective includes improving the collection of data and information to prepare indicators; identify the indicators with the highest correlation between investment, time and results and, finally, develop projects to improve the identified indicators.
