Unicamp has opened registrations for the 14th edition of the National Olympiad in Brazilian History (ONHB), a project aimed at students and teachers from public and private schools across the country. The deadline to register is April 22nd. Interested parties can also take advantage of the discounted registration period until March 10th.

To participate, interested parties must form teams of three elementary school students (8th and 9th years) and/or high school, plus a History teacher. In the last edition, in 2021, 9,3 groups from all Brazilian states participated.

The 14th edition will take place between May 2nd and June 11th. In total, there will be six online phases, with multiple choice questions and task completion. The final is expected to be held in person, at Unicamp, in Campinas (SP), on the 20th and 21st of August. In the two previous editions, in 2020 and 2021, the final took place online due to the pandemic

“Our expectation is that there will be health security for us to hold the final at Unicamp. It is a very important experience for the teams that reach the final, an opportunity to get to know a university like Unicamp and interact with students from all over Brazil”, explains Cristina Meneguello, coordinator of ONHB and professor at the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences at Unicamp. (IFCH).

How the History Olympiad works

The six online phases last one week each. Multiple choice questions and tasks can be solved by participants based on debate with colleagues, teacher guidance, research in books or the internet, in addition to a range of documents and references offered in the test.

In addition to questions about the History of Brazil, the ONHB presents interdisciplinary themes, related to the fields of geography, literature, archeology, cultural heritage, urbanism, current affairs, etc.

“ONHB is an important tool for teaching Brazilian History and a stimulus for students’ critical analysis. It also contributes to preparing students for entrance exams, competitions and exams, such as ENEM”, adds Meneguello.

The competition is also part of Unicamp's 'Olympic Vacancies' notice. Depending on their performance, participants can compete for two places on the undergraduate History course at Unicamp, without taking the entrance exam.

The ONHB is carried out with the support of the Department of History at Unicamp and has the participation of university professors, undergraduate students, master's students and doctoral students.
