ExxonMobil announces its first Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) project in Brazil, in the area of carbon capture. Led by Unicamp, the project aims to create new materials that can be used as adsorbents and catalysts to reduce CO2 In the atmosphere.
"This partnership has the potential to leverage technological solutions to concerns related to energy from hydrocarbons. Unicamp is known for its highly qualified staff, which is an important differentiator in this joint work”, highlights Márcio Bastos, Research and Development manager at ExxonMobil. “We are making investments in projects with the potential to be implemented in the coming years and which will be a reference point for the industry.”
"The foundations for the development of the science involved in this work are solid and were built over a long period of preliminary studies", says Heloise Pastore Jensen, professor at the Unicamp Chemistry Institute and project coordinator. "Mitigating CO emissions2 by capture is one of the central objectives of the research, and undoubtedly the most urgent. However, the use of the entire mass of carbon available in the atmosphere for the production of fuels, plastics and industrial solvents will guarantee their more sustainable use", he concluded.
ExxonMobil has been advancing carbon capture and storage solutions around the world, with a focus on decarbonizing energy-intensive industries. The company was the first to capture more than 120 million metric tons of CO2, equivalent to the annual emissions of more than 25 million motor vehicles.
ExxonMobil's work is vital because carbon capture and storage is one of the few technologies proven to help decarbonize energy-intensive industries and reduce emissions to the levels needed to meet global climate goals set by the Paris Agreement.
