With the aim of further strengthening Unicamp's relations with the City of Campinas, the rector of Unicamp, Antonio José de Almeida Meirelles, met this morning with the mayor of Campinas, Dario Saadi. The meeting took place in the Mayor's Office and was also attended by the vice-mayor, Wanderley de Almeida, the Secretary of Health, Lair Zambon, the general coordinator of the University, professor Maria Luiza Moretti, and the Executive Director of the Health Area , Oswaldo Grassiotto. One of the projects that should consolidate this partnership is the construction of the metropolitan hospital in the Campinas Region, in an area provided by Unicamp at Fazenda Argentina. “We will give full support to the project because it expands the supply of beds and health services for Campinas and the entire Metropolitan Region”, said the mayor.
Scheduled to open in two years, the regional hospital will offer 350 beds and will be technically managed by Unicamp. “The construction of the metropolitan hospital will be crucial for expanding care for the RMC population”, stated Maria Luiza Moretti. According to IBGE data, the RMC reached the mark of 3,3 million inhabitants in 2021. In addition to serving the population, the rector highlighted the importance of the new hospital for the training of the University's students.
For the Health Secretary of Campinas, Lair Zambon, partnerships between public authorities and the University are important to expand the provision of services to society. He gave as an example the Sumaré Hospital, whose management is the result of a partnership between Unicamp and the State Department of Health (SES-SP). Since September 2000, the Hospital has been managed through a management contract – with productivity and quality targets – and through an agreement between the State Department of Health and Unicamp. The secretary suggested that a new regional hospital offer training projects for health professionals in the region.
The state government will pay for the construction of the new hospital, with planned investments of R$320 million for the work. The costs of the operation must be divided between the SUS, the RMC city halls and the State government, via the Department of Health. The Secretary of Health of Campinas and Mayor Dario stated that Campinas is capable of making this investment. “Our city will gain 350 new hospital beds, so we will fully support the creation of the new hospital at Unicamp”, said Dario Saadi. He offered to help in negotiations with the state government and the mayors of the RMC. “Let's go for it!” he concluded.
