“Our management at the Unicamp rectory has a strong commitment to improving health care. A new hospital is essential to increase the number of beds, organize the care system currently offered and provide better care for the population. The University has already made a commitment to provide an area for construction and wants to continue working with the mayors of the RMC to implement this project”, stated the general coordinator of the University, Maria Luiza Moretti, to mayors, deputies and municipal health secretaries. The meeting with members of the Campinas Metropolitan Region Development Council (CD-RMC) took place on February 23, in Sumaré.
The presentation was another step towards the implementation of the Campinas metropolitan regional hospital, for which Unicamp must provide an area of 40 thousand square meters. “Through the entire Unicamp health complex, which includes the Hospital das Clínicas, Caism, Hemocentro and Gastrocentro, as well as the hospitals of Sumaré and Piracicaba, in whose management we participate, the University has an important role in the health system of Campinas and the region. It is our intention to consolidate this participation through the new hospital. We believe it may have a role in regulation of resources available in public health for RMC”, highlighted Maria Luiza.
The mayor of Jaguariúna and president of CD-RMC, Gustavo Reis, also defended the construction of the hospital. “We already have the area, support from the University and the state government. We have to mobilize within this Council to accelerate the project, which is strategic for the health area of our cities,” he said. According to the mayor of Campinas, Dario Saadi, the pandemic showed the great challenges for health care, and the importance of good hospital infrastructure. State deputy Dirceu Dalben mentioned the successful partnership between the Bauru Clinical Hospital and USP, which made it possible to expand service to the entire region. “We have to formalize the Council’s support with an official proposal for the State government and guarantee resources for construction”, he stated.
Campinas Health Secretary, Lair Zambon, expressed his enthusiasm for the new hospital. For him, this is an opportunity to integrate, in the health area, the state government and RMC city halls, through a regulatory system that would interface the State with the municipalities. "The lack of integration ends up making the health system more expensive. With a centralized regulatory system in this hospital, covering the entire region, we can make care cheaper for the State and more efficient for the population." He also defended that part of the beds in the metropolitan hospital be reserved for urgent and emergency cases.
The new hospital should have 350 new hospitalization beds available for the RMC population, estimated at 3,3 million inhabitants. The planned investment for the construction of the unit is R$320 million. The proposal is that it be installed in an area provided by Unicamp at Fazenda Argentina and be technically managed by the University. The costs of the operation must be divided between SUS, RMC city halls and the State Department of Health.
