In the last five years, there has been a 116% increase in direct jobs generated by companies hosted in the Unicamp Scientific and Technological Park, managed by Inova Unicamp Innovation Agency. By the end of 2021, the 41 companies in the Park generated 729 job positions, with 74% of this total dedicated to Research and Development (R&D) functions. In 2017, the 29 companies maintained 337 jobs. The data are from the first Unicamp Scientific and Technological Park Annual Report, produced by Inova Unicamp and released this week.
The director of the Scientific and Technological Park at Unicamp, Eduardo Gurgel do Amaral, explains that highlighting R&D positions is part of the strategic vision and scientific character of the Park, which encourages innovation and entrepreneurship around Unicamp. Furthermore, since 2017, 62 research agreements have been signed between companies in the Park and Unicamp, totaling more than R$38 million in investment in R&D projects in partnership with the University.
“Unicamp Park is an important agent promoting innovation in the region and is constantly expanding to bring more positive impacts to the University, its companies and the entire ecosystem in the region, which see advantages beyond our infrastructure - an area of 350 thousand m² within the campus. Here, companies have access to qualified human resources and it is easy to close partnerships with new research projects with Unicamp”, comments Gurgel do Amaral.
Among these research partnerships, we can mention the Idea! Group, present in the Núcleo and Soma do Parque buildings, and which has maintained research agreements with Unicamp for more than five years. In addition to hiring talent from the University and offering innovation stimulus grants for the development of technology for optical data transmission systems at high speed internet, the Group takes advantage of the Park's connections and strategic location to establish partnerships such as the supply of X-ray technology for SIRIUS, the Brazilian particle accelerator, which is neighboring the Park.
“Cooperation projects with Unicamp are fundamental for the technological consolidation of the Idea! Group, for several reasons. Among them, the training of human resources in technological topics aligned with our roadmap, the opportunity to cooperate with research groups, including top professors and students, and the possibility of quickly meeting market needs with more creative solutions”, comments Jacklyn Dias Reis, director of Microelectronics at Grupo Idea!.
Data and analysis are available for download free on Unicamp Scientific and Technological Park Annual Report 2021, which now has a publication dedicated to the results of the Park and its Incubator, with space for the success stories of the companies installed.
“It was time to give greater visibility not only to the companies that invest in Unicamp's innovation ecosystem, but also to the results of these partnerships that make our ecosystem increasingly vibrant in technology and innovation. Therefore, we planned the first report in order to share our success stories, efforts and strategies with the innovation and entrepreneurship community”, says Professor Ana Frattini, executive director of Inova Unicamp.
Revenue of startups and incubated companies in the Park quadruples and exceeds R$ 54 million
In addition to the results in the R&D area, the Report highlights the strengthening of companies incubated in Unicamp's Technology-Based Business Incubator (Incamp) and startups hosted in the Park over the last five years. Together, the 32 companies had four times more revenue, going from R$10 million in 2017 to R$54,5 million in 2021.
Professor Renato Lopes, associate director of Inova Unicamp, comments that the capture of funding and investment resources by companies in the Park grew at the same rate. They amounted to almost R$11 million raised in 2017 and closed at more than R$56 million in 2021:
“Even with two consecutive years of pandemic, our companies remain within Unicamp, seeking the best from this partnership, which echoes cutting-edge technology and innovation with socio-environmental impact. It allows startups and incubated companies to grow with us and R&D laboratories to renew their collaborative projects with Unicamp”, says Lopes.
Unicamp's Scientific and Technological Park is a complex that allows innovative startups, research laboratories from companies that maintain active R&D projects with Unicamp and ventures incubated in Unicamp's Technology-Based Business Incubator (Incamp) to set up in one of the its buildings within the main campus of the University.
These different types of businesses can stay in the Park as they are important actors in taking the knowledge produced to the market and accelerating changes, as in the case of startups.
