Unicamp was awarded in the “Patent Generation" category of the Clarivate Research Excellence Awards, placing it among the three most innovative Brazilian public universities. The award evaluates the volume of inventive activity and the promotion of intellectual property protection. According to the ranking, In the last twenty years, Unicamp has registered the second highest number of inventions published and granted by INPI (National Institute of Industrial Property), alongside UFMG and USP.
The analysis was released at the event “Sustainability, quality and innovation of scientific production in Brazil”, held with the support of the Capes Periodicals Portal, on June 9th. Professor Ana Frattini, executive director of Inova Unicamp, explained, on the occasion, the ways in which innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand to guarantee a promising future, through quality scientific production.
“We have managed to bring this protected knowledge to society, with the generation of technology-based businesses. This is the result of a culture established over the last two decades, with the incentive for professors look at the social impact of their research”, stated Frattini.
The body responsible for managing the University's Patent Portfolio is the Inova Unicamp Innovation Agency, which works to support registration, identification of opportunities and promotion of activities to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship, expanding the impact of teaching, research and extension in favor of development sustained.
According to the latest report from Inova Unicamp, the University has 1276 protections between patents filed and granted. Last year alone, 129 of them were granted by INPI, ensuring the University's priority right.
“This is a small part of the scientific production developed at Unicamp, which, when licensed, translates into financial gains reinvested in the University. A portion is allocated to inventors to continue this cycle”, said the executive director.
Frattini highlighted the number of technology licensing signed in 2021. There were 30 contracts, involving more than 80 researchers, including free licenses for public institutions and hospitals.
Unicamp also accumulates 65 spin-offs - companies born from knowledge and Unicamp technologies - in the last 20 years. Last year alone, seven were created. “Whether through technology transfer or the creation of technology-based startups, we are reaping good results from our research”, concluded Frattini.
