The Rectory of Unicamp publicly expresses its indignation and deep regret at the death of indigenous worker Bruno Pereira, a licensed employee of Funai, and Dom Phillips, an English journalist directly involved in the Amazon agenda. Three days after the bodies were identified, Unicamp calls for justice.
The escalation of violence in Vale do Javari and several other areas of the Amazon has been widely denounced by national and international organizations. The dismantling of public institutions dedicated to the protection of indigenous peoples and the forest results in death. Indigenous people are the greatest protectors of forest life. When they die, or when their defenders die, the forest dies and part of our humanity dies.
Recognizing the importance of the ancestral knowledge of the original peoples of our country, Unicamp has held the Indigenous Entrance Exam. Since 2018, an average of 70 students of different ethnicities have entered the university annually. Unicamp positions itself alongside the democratic forces that fight to protect life in all its diversity and richness, and that demand an in-depth investigation of the political and economic circumstances that led to the brutal murders of Dom and Bruno.
