The population will have a new hospital unit within its public network at Unicamp. The IOU, Institute of Otorhinolaryngology & Head and Neck Surgery, will have capacity for 200 consultations and 4 surgeries per year, in a hybrid system, with 70% of services directed to the SUS (Unified Health System) and 30% to the private public. The most modern institute specializing in Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, teaching and research in Brazil, will be inaugurated this Tuesday (28), at 9 am, in Campinas (SP).
The non-profit Institute will be the largest complex in care, surgery, teaching and research in the area. It will offer multidisciplinary treatment, modern procedures and highly complex surgeries, with non-invasive methods, for patients with cancer and diseases of the respiratory tract, nose, ear and throat. It will be the main medical-hospital center for a population of 7 million inhabitants in the 90 cities close to Campinas.
“Brazil lacked training centers in surgical techniques and specialized clinical procedures, which forced the greatest local talents to seek improvement abroad. Now the IOU is positioned as one of the main training and qualification centers of excellence in the area of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery on the continent”, says Agrício Crespo, director of the IOU and professor at the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Unicamp. The idea is to train doctors in procedures capable of offering the best international standards in medical care.
Excellence in training and research
The teaching hospital will receive approximately 130 medicine and speech therapy students from Unicamp per year, as well as residents from all over Brazil. The Institute has a Genomics Laboratory, coordinated by scientist Paulo Arruda, one of the biggest names in Brazilian genetics, and will dedicate itself to two lines of research: genetics of deafness and head and neck cancers.
The Institute was born as a reference center for highly complex procedures, as it was created by the Otorhinolaryngology Division of the Unicamp Clinics hospital, a pioneer in laryngeal cancer surgery using a minimally invasive method and in vocal rehabilitation using speech prostheses.
“We are the first public institution in Brazil to perform endoscopic surgeries for laryngeal cancer using a CO2 laser, which reduces the hospitalization period from 10 days to 24 hours, in addition to greatly facilitating the post-operative period. international gold and is just one example of the innovative methods adopted at the Institute”, explains Agrício Crespo.
