When Zeferino Vaz visited the expansion works of the university he founded exactly 56 years ago, he was aboard an elegant yellow Ford Corcel GT, year 1971 – at the time, a sports car –, which was crossing the Anhanguera highway from São Paulo towards Campinas . On the way, with the wind blowing in his face, Zeferino made life plans and worried about the future of the university.
Zeferino Vaz died in 1981, leaving the legacy of a “sower of universities”, three young children and, in the garage, the yellow Ford Corcel. Sérgio Vaz, one of Zeferino's sons, grew up with the memory of his father and the presence of the car, which he took care of throughout his life.
It was the story of the zeal of a son, a preserved car and its owner, the founder of Unicamp, that reporters from the Executive Secretariat for Communication (SEC) Hebe Rios and Marcos Botelho went to get, retracing the route from São Paulo to Campinas on the yellow Corcel, alongside Sérgio Vaz.
The trip, which ended in front of the large panel in honor of Zeferino Vaz, erected near the Unicamp Rectory, is recorded in the report “Um Certo Corcel”, shown from today (5/10) on Unicamp's official YouTube (TV Unicamp).
In addition to the report, two other videos make up a series celebrating Unicamp's 56th anniversary this Wednesday, the 5th. The “Commitment” video relates the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with ongoing actions at Unicamp, such as the creation of Hids – International Hub for Sustainable Development, the implementation of renewable energy generation, the adoption of policies for the inclusion and retention of more vulnerable populations in undergraduate courses, or even extension curricularization initiatives. The script was prepared based on an article signed by the rector of Unicamp, Antonio José de Almeida Meirelles.
The third report in the series, “Time from home”, tells a little about the story of the oldest employee still working at the University. Roberto Orlando Pereira, 73 years old, has been at Unicamp for 54 years and today works at the Cesar Lattes Central Library. He followed the implementation of the Library System from the beginning, met researcher César Lattes and even designed the layout of the furniture in the old units, before migrating the collection to the current building.
The three videos can be seen on the Unicamp YouTube channel (TV Unicamp) and will also be shown on cable channel 10. Editing was in charge of Kleber Casablanca and Diohny C. Andrade. The images are by João Ricardo Luiz and Marcos Botelho. The coordination is by Patrícia Lauretti.
