On October 13th, the Dean of Extension and Culture will hold another edition of the Permanent Forums with the theme “Strategies and challenges in the application of artificial intelligence in health and agriculture”. The event will be in person, in auditorium 3 of the Unicamp Convention Center, and will bring together Brazilian and French researchers to discuss the current scenario and the prospects for using artificial intelligence resources in the health and agricultural sectors in order to guarantee the economic and social development in a sustainable way, as well as thinking about the ethical and legal implications of these technologies and the challenges of training people for this new context. The Forum is an initiative of Brazilian Institute of Data Science (BI0S), from Unicamp, and 3IA, the Interdisciplinary Institute for Artificial Intelligence, based at the Université Côte d'Azur, in Nice (France).
The program (check at the end of the text) has four discussion tables. In the morning, an overview of the use of artificial intelligence in health and agriculture will be presented and an overview of where the development of these technologies should lead. Contributions to the diagnosis of diseases, improvement of imaging tests and resources that facilitate agricultural production are among the topics to be debated. In the afternoon, researchers discuss the ethical aspects involved in the use of artificial intelligence and the needs to update regulatory frameworks. “There will be both an overview of the applications of Artificial Intelligence in health and agriculture, as well as a broader discussion on questions that are still open on the topic", explains Leonardo Tomazeli Duarte, professor at the Faculty of Applied Sciences (FCA) and one of the Forum organizers.
Registration for participation in the Permanent Forums is free and can be done on the website
Franco-Brazilian Opportunity
Created in 2021, BI0S is one of the Applied Research Centers in Artificial Intelligence approved through a call from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), Fapesp (São Paulo State Research Support Foundation) and Management Committee of the Internet in Brazil (CGI.br). The research carried out by the center focuses on the application of data science in medicine and agriculture and also on the development of new research methods for application in other sectors.
According to the Pro-Rector of Research at Unicamp and coordinator of BI0S, João Marcos Romano, the collaboration with 3IA to organize the Permanent Forum on artificial intelligence was a consequence of the work that the university develops with French institutions and funding bodies. “We have close contact with the French consulate. Some University bodies made recent visits to French institutions. This has been a very dynamic partnership, which brings our vice-rectorate, HIDS [International Hub for Sustainable Development] and Deri [Executive Directorate of International Relations] closer to the consulate,” he explains.
He comments that the creation of 3IA in France occurred in a context similar to that of Brazil, in which research centers dedicated to the topic were also created in the country. “Through this contact, the opportunity arose for representatives from Université Côte d'Azur to visit Unicamp, which coincided with the organization of the forum.”
Currently, BI0S carries out technical-scientific activities, such as seminars, interactions between researchers and the development of research projects. The center's official inauguration event is scheduled for November 28th, within the schedule of the 11th Brazilian Conference on Intelligent Systems (BRACIS 2022), an event held by the Brazilian Computing Society (SBC), which, this year, counts on BI0S as organizer and will be based at Unicamp.
