Last day of the second phase of the Unicamp Entrance Exam addresses worsening hunger

The tests in the second phase consist of essay questions and are divided into two days

The second phase of the Unicamp 2023 Entrance Exam came to an end this Monday (12), with an abstention rate of 8,5%, the lowest since 2009. A total of 11.634 candidates took the exam and are competing for 2.540 places in 69 courses. graduation. The worsening of hunger in Brazil and the country's relationship with Latin American identities were topics covered in the test. Candidates for courses Architecture and Urbanism, Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Dance will still hold Specific Skills tests in January.

“We attribute this lower rate [of abstention] to the fact that the entrance exam is being held in December, when students are still in school activities”, assesses the director of Comvest, José Alves de Freitas Neto.

The tests in the second phase consist of essay questions and are divided into two days. On Sunday (11), candidates answered interdisciplinary questions on English Language and Natural Sciences and questions on Portuguese Language and Literature. That day, they wrote an essay, for which they could choose between two themes: carrying weapons and anti-racist education. On Monday, Mathematics and Human Sciences questions were applied, in addition to specific knowledge questions according to the candidate's intended course.

The answers expected by the exam boards will be published by the Unicamp Permanent Entrance Exam Committee (Comvest) next Thursday, December 15. The first call will be announced on February 6 and those invited must register online (not in person) between the days February 7 and 9.

According to the director of Comvest, the tests maintained the exacting standards of previous years. The professor highlighted two questions from the interdisciplinary Human Sciences test because they were connected to the debate on the first day's test. One of them addressed the worsening of hunger in Brazil in recent years, a theme that, according to José Alves, “socially explains that hunger is not a matter of nature, but a political and moral shame for our country”.

The other question addressed Brazil and its relationship with Latin American identities, designed based on a classic work by Uruguayan artist Joaquín Torres García, called “Inverted America”, and its resignification by recent indigenous movements. The question also brought up the lyrics of Belchior’s song “Just a Latin American Boy”. “These questions show that the Unicamp Vestibular continues with its concern of bringing contemporary themes that draw attention to the perspective that pre-university students need to have in relation to social, scientific and cultural knowledge of our times”, said José Alves.

The search for a university of excellence

For student João Gabriel Moneta, the test topics were interesting and consistent with the notice. The candidate, who aims for a place in Mechanical Engineering, explains why he is seeking admission to Unicamp. “I always wanted to have academic opportunities that I didn't have, like sandwich exchanges, good teachers. I'm only taking Unicamp this year, I'm 100% focused on it. It’s one of the top three in Brazil and, what’s more, it’s still in my city.”

He got to know Unicamp's Barão Geraldo campus through the Open Doors University (UPA) program, as did university student Lara de Miranda, from Paulínia (SP), who is looking for a place in the Performing Arts course. “I think I really fit into Unicamp’s profile because of the people there. For me it has always been a dream, given the name it has. Once I started researching living on campus, I fell in love. I went to UPA this year and just being there was a really good energy.”

Next to the candidate was her mother, Cintia Miranda, sharing expectations with her daughter. “We feel privileged to be in Paulínia and have a university like this next door. I already see my daughter as a winner for having made it to the second phase. If it doesn't happen this time, we'll try again. She is hard-working and dedicated and will reap the rewards of this dedication.”

Schoolmates in Amparo (SP), students Gian Lima and Maria Cecília Ferreira were waiting for the gates to open to take the test. Aspiring to take courses in Literature and Pedagogy, respectively, they seek to pursue an undergraduate degree at Unicamp, according to what they said, because of the University's level of excellence. “I chose Unicamp because it has one of the best colleges there, for its research and because it is a reference in terms of university. I thought about Pedagogy because I like teaching and I like children”, said Ferreira.
