Unicamp's postgraduate programs achieved a level of excellence in 36 of its programs, according to the 2017-2020 four-year evaluation by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes). In total, 84 postgraduate courses stricto sensu were evaluated, of which 68 received grades 5, 6 or 7, equivalent to about 81% of the total. The level of excellence, grades 6 and 7, was obtained by 42% of the courses. The evaluation also shows the evolution of the programs: 30 courses increased their grades in relation to the previous quadrennium, 2013-2016, which represents progress in 35,7% of the programs.
The results were disclosed this Monday (19th) during the Seminar “Quadriennial Evaluation: past, present and future”, held by Capes. All areas of knowledge, at Unicamp, recorded an increase in grades, with emphasis on programs in Health Sciences, Engineering and Human Sciences.
"We have a very positive scenario at the University. Unicamp had a very important increase in its grades. [...] We stand out for the excellence of our programs, our ability to train students, our ability to adapt to the job market” , assessed the dean of Postgraduate Studies, Rachel Meneghello.
Ratings also increase on the national scene
At the national level, we analyzed 4.512 programs, of which 54% maintained their grades and 34% recorded an increase. The number of excellent programs, with grades 6 and 7, grew 37% compared to the last evaluation period. One of the highlights was the Northeast region, where the number of grade 7 programs increased from 37 to 60, and the North, which did not have any grade 7 programs and, in this latest evaluation, now has three.
At the end of this evaluation, 15% of the entire postgraduate system had scores of 6 and 7. “It is a context of the national evaluation system that demonstrates the ability, even in such difficult times, to see their successes recognized”, said the president of Capes, Cláudia de Toledo, on the occasion of the release of the notes.
She also highlighted the quality of the evaluated productions. 4,7 million intellectual productions were registered, with 280 qualitative productions indicated by the evaluation coordinators. “We had a large scenario of quantity, but a valuable scenario of quality productions indicated by the programs as qualitative productions. It was also what differentiated this quadrennium [from the others].”
Capes Assessment
Postgraduate evaluation by Capes takes place every four years. Programs are classified with grades ranging from 1 to 7. Grades 1 and 2 imply disqualification from the course. Among the criteria analyzed are the scientific production of professors and students, the qualification of the faculty, the quality of student training and the social impact of the program. The grades serve as a basis for granting aid and indicate the degree of development of the course.
